From Wolf to Man’s Best Friend |
|
Any puppy from the age of 8 weeks and up can be taught to behave. If you were to go back and look at the wolf, you would see a dog that runs, plays, digs, can be dominant, can be leader of the pack and sometimes even aggressive.
Over the years, we have domesticated the dog. Now we want them to behave. No more digging, running free, being dominant being the leader or being aggressive. We want the perfect dog. One that comes when we call them, doesn’t jump on people, doesn’t piddle on the floor or chew up Dad’s best shoes. We want them to walk beside us when we go for walks, not pull or find everything in the world to eat. We want them to be friendly and not attack the mailman or UPS person. |

So, what do we do to accomplish this small task? First off, make sure your dog knows the rules. Rules are taught when you first bring the dog home. Generally, he is a puppy of 6—8 weeks of age. I know what you are saying right now, “but he is so cute, I can’t scold him”. There really is no need to scold him or hit a newspaper against your hand or push his nose in his own mess. That type of training should never be used on a small puppy or for that matter any age dog. It will only make them fearful of you or your hands.
Take, for example, your own child. You basically put the baby on a regular schedule of feeding, you change the diaper when the baby needs it and you put the baby to bed when he needs sleep. Puppies are no different. They need their own space to sleep in; which a crate works great for this. Puppies need to eat 3—4 times a day of a well balanced food that does not contain a lot of fillers. (the nutrition section for advice on the right food) And they need to be trained to go outside to potty. There are a lot of other things to teach the puppy but this is the most immediate issues I would suggest dealing with first. |

6-16 week old Puppy Obedience With this age puppy we prefer to train him/her in their own home. Less chance of being exposed to illness. Training can start as early as 6 weeks. The training is designed to teach you how to deal with your puppy in a safe and effective manner. Doesn’t matter if the puppy is playing top dog or shy dog. You will be taught how to get your dog to listen to you along with the basic commands of sit, down, stay, heel and come. |
